World number one Brooks Koepka has dismissed the thought he has a competition with Rory McIlroy.
Koepka, whose closest challenger in the world rankings is McIlroy, pointed out that the Northern Irishman hasnt won a major since the American joined the PGA Tour at 2015.
Im not looking at anybody behind me. Im number one in the entire world, he explained.
Ive got open road in front of me I am not looking in the rearview mirror, therefore that I dont see it as a rivalry.
I have been out here for, what, five years. Rory hasnt won a major because Ive been around the PGA Tour.
29, koepka, spoke on the eve of the CJ Cup PGA Tour event that starts in South Korea on Thursday.
You know whether the fans do [call it a competition ], then thats on them and it may be interesting, added the world number one, that equalled McIlroys tally of four important wins by successfully defending his US PGA Championship in May.
McIlroys final important victory came in precisely exactly the same place in 2014 but he did win the Fedex Cup title of the PGA Tour this year and was also named player of the year by his former own PGA Tour pros.
Look I love Rory hes a great player and he is fun to see, but it is simply difficult to believe there is a competition in golf. I simply dont view it, continued Koepka.
McIlroy, 30, asserted he employed a rivalry mentality to watch the American at the Tour Championship off .
Four months before, Koepka had comprehensively outplayed McIlroy to win the World Golf Championship event in Memphis along with the Northern Irishman said that he was determined to avenge that defeat in the PGA Tour finale.
He Koepka spoke about trying to be the dominant player in the match… and I thoughtHes going to have to go through me first, said McIlroy following his East Lake victory.
If thats both of those mentalities moving forward, I think thats good for the game.
Koepka was in the US PGA and shared fourth place with the best leading end in 2019 of McIlroy an eighth location in the Masters and US Open.
