The Major League Baseball playoffs kick off tonight in Washington DC as the Washington Nationals host the Milwaukee Brewers .
The wild card round is a must-win, one-game series, in which theyll match up with all the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers and the winner will advance to the National League Divisional Series.
The Brewers locate themselves following a start to September that watched them go out of emptiness into making the playoffs with a furious end to the year at the card. The Brewers came so close to grabbing the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League Central Division title but came up just two games short as they finished up the regular season by dropping three consecutive matches into the afterward last-place Colorado Rockies.
The Brewers have been forced to play without their very best player, dominating NL MVP Christian Yelich, as September 10th, when Yelich fouled a ball off his knee, breaking his knee cap and finish his season. The Brewers could stay hot without him for a few weeks prior to running out of gasoline in Colorado.
For the Nationals, they looked as if they would have no chance and started out the year 19-31. However, they got healthy and began stringing together wins at the second half and finished the year as the leading wild card giving them home-field benefit tonight.
Beginning for the Nationals is Cy Young Award candidate, Max Scherzer (11-7 2.92 ERA) and for the Brewers, it is Brandon Woodruff (11-3 3.62 ERA). The game is set at seven and a half runs. The Nationals are -178 home favorites. First pitch is scheduled for 5:08 PM PST from Nationals Park at Washington DC.
Its truly tough to understand what happened in September to the Milwaukee Brewers. They had a stretch where they gained eighteen from twenty games, with many of these games coming following Yelich hit on the IL. They seemed poised to pass on the St. Louis Cardinals for the division title and progress right to the NLDS. They all had to do was win the series at Colorado from the Rockies whod lost six from the past eight games.
And they moved to Colorado and put an egg, dropping all three games. Not only did they kill the momentum that they had earlier in the month , confront what is likely the best pitcher in the league at Max Scherzer and then they have to proceed to Washington tonight. And when they find a way to conquer the Nationals and Mad Max, then they have to try and stop .
The best they have to the mound tonight will be sent by the Brewers. Before he went down with a knee injury in 16, woodruff was having a season. He didnt go back before mid-September to the team and missed several weeks of action. He has made two appearances since rejoining the team and has pitched only four innings that was combined. They have been obviously taking things slowly with Woodruff, and he has looked really good in action as he hasnt allowed a hit run on his four innings of work.
Woodruff confronted the Nationals after his year and also had a solid outing. Against Washington, Woodruff pitched six innings of both one-run ball on May 8th, picking up the win due to his attempts and allowing just four hits. Even though Woodruff has demonstrated the capability to get deep into matches, hes pitched six innings or eleven occasions this season, you can expect the Brewers to keep him to the tightest of leashes tonight. Milwaukee is quick to go to the bullpen, and theyll do that tonight at the very first indication of trouble.
Max Scherzer missed a couple of weeks in July and has been since returning, OK. He had been the leading Cy Young candidate at the NL, when he went down with the injury. However, since returning, hes a very typical 2-2 with a 4.81 ERA. After allowing only nine home runs hes allowed nine home runs in his last innings.
In his lone start against the Brewers this season, Scherzer pitched six innings, gave up one earned run and struck out ten. The Nationals have an bullpen, and I would expect that Washington will ride Mad Max up to when he gets into trouble hell take them could turn the game over to Patrick Corbin or even fellow novices Stephen Strasburg.
I like the Nationals. They are favorites, and I think Max Scherzer will be really great tonight. Contrary to Woodruff, that will not be by the time the inning comes about from the game, you are able to pen Scherzer in for seven-plus innings tonight. With his recent struggles, Scherzer has been striking guys at an epic pace. He has strikeouts in two-thirds of a inning pitched in September and just twenty-nine.
Betting playoff baseball can be tough. The numbers to the favorites back are usually steep, because the best teams find a way to win when it matters, and that is. Therefore, you either have the choice of placing more timber than you would like to or take a shot onto a big underdog that wont come through. I will lay that wood today.
When youve been studying my column you know I prefer to come across underdogs to rear. Its not hard to obtain an undervalued underdog that offers a great deal of value Whenever there are thirteen to fifteen games on the program. Tonight, there is but 1 match, and all the worth talk goes off, and it boils down to just who do you believe will win the match. And tonight, I always still feel for a lot of reasons, that the Nationals would be the side to back. I will lay a bit more although Id enjoy, but know I am on the perfect side tonight. Give me that the Washington Nationals as home favorites laying -178.
