(CNN) — For over a decade, the United States asserted its dominance in global men’s soccer. All of that changed when Team USA lost its first match into Australia since 2006.
The Boomers, ranked 11th by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), won its first match against No. 1 ranked USA, beating the team 98-94. The game was played having a bunch of over 52,000 in Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, the largest crowd to see basketball in Australia.
The US had won 78 games directly in important awards and tournaments before Saturday’s World Cup exhibition matchup.
“The Aussies gave us a excellent lesson as much as where we now must be and we need to perform in this sort of competition,” US head coach Gregg Popovich said after the match. “So, we will get accustomed to this and learn.”
The loss comes two weeks after the US defeat Australia 102-86 on Thursday. Was during the FIBA World Championship’s 2006 semifinals.
“Nobody wins eternally,” Popovich said.
The US’ exhibition is Monday against Canada in Sydney before going to the World Cup in China. There the defending World Cup champion will face the Czech Republic.
