(CNN) — For over a decade, the United States asserted its dominance in global men’s basketball. All that changed Saturday, when Team USA dropped its first game since 2006.
The Boomers, ranked 11th by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), won its first game against No. 1 rated USA, beating the group 98-94. The game has been played with a bunch of over 52,000 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, the biggest audience ever to see basketball.
The US had won 78 games in major international awards and awards before Saturday’s World Cup display matchup.
“The Aussies gave us a terrific lesson as much as where we must be and how we need to perform in this kind of competition,” US head coach Gregg Popovich said after the game. “Thus, we will get accustomed to this and hopefully learn.”
The reduction includes two days after the US defeat Australia 102-86 on Thursday. Was through the 2006 semifinals of the FIBA World Championship.
“Nobody wins forever,” Popovich said.
The US’ exhibition is Monday from Canada in Sydney before heading to the World Cup in China. There the defending World Cup winner will face the Czech Republic on September 1.
