(CNN) — For more than a decade, the United States asserted its dominance in international men’s soccer. When Team USA lost its first game to Australia since 2006 all of that changed Saturday.
The Boomers, ranked 11th by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), won its first game against No. 1 ranked USA, beating the group 98-94. The game was played having a crowd of over 52,000, the biggest crowd ever to see basketball in Australia.
The US had won 78 games in exhibitions and major international tournaments before Saturday’s World Cup display matchup.
“The Aussies gave us a excellent lesson as far as where we must be and how we have to play in this type of competition,” US head coach Gregg Popovich said after the match. “Thus, we’ll get accustomed to that and hopefully learn.”
The loss includes two weeks after the US defeat Australia 102-86 on Thursday. Was during the 2006 semifinals of the FIBA World Championship.
“nobody wins indefinitely,” Popovich said.
The US’ exhibition is Monday against Canada in Sydney before heading to the World Cup in China. There the two-time defending World Cup champion will face the Czech Republic on September 1.
